A group calling on Utah leaders to rein in Flock cameras says it’s found a way for one Utah agency to pull the plug — without waiting for action from lawmakers.

The Utah Civic Compact found out that the Utah Department of Transportation’s contract allows it to end its installation agreement in the event “it determines that the public does not support the Company’s activities,” according to a copy shared with Utah News Dispatch.

In this weekend’s Dispatch we look at UDOT’s Flock contract and bring you our top stories from the week, including two sheriffs charged with obstruction in the case tied to Kouri Richins’ prosecution, and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson calling out the Trump administration’s political “gamesmanship” with voting rights.

“We wouldn’t be determining the big-picture questions of whether these cameras should be out there or, you know, what the purpose is. So those types of questions would have to go to the law enforcement agencies that put them out there.” — UDOT spokesman John Gleason on whether the department would reconsider its contract with Flock.

The nonprofit Utah Civic Compact, which is lobbying lawmakers for tighter restrictions on license plate readers and their data, says the Utah Department of Transportation has the power to cut its contract with the company.

UDOT attorneys are reviewing the contract, said spokesperson John Gleason. But he also said the department’s focus right now is on verifying the cameras along state roads have the proper permits, and it’s still working to count them all. Bigger questions around the cameras, he said, would fall to the police departments that put them there.
